13 Things About Me [to be completed]

  1. PROTIP: controlling the wind takes precision. How else do you think those guys in Wanted are able to curve bullets?
  2. I've been playing Ingress for quite some time already (since before the Persepolis Anomaly) and am a well-established Level 6 Resistance trainer. This is why I chose Team Instinct

Now for questions:

1. Who would win in a fight, A knowledgable fool or an ignorant sage?

Well, seeing that the second is a bit of an oxymoron, consider this: why do you think the Fool is the most powerful card in the Tarot? Not because the person who draws it is a fool. He's a fool because he's a clean slate. And therefore, can become anything. After all, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. But keep in mind, though; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there, shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again.

2. Do you have OCs? If so, who's your favorite?

Oh yes, many indeed. But my all-time favorite (not considering my fursona Sean) is Kurotatsu Nisshyoku the dragon familiar.

3. Do you play Smite?

No, but my brother :iconskarmorysilver: does

4. If you had to choose one over the other, Freedom or Unity?

I'd prefer both, but having saved the Skid Row that is the Clave, unity cedes precedence to freedom.

5. Sword, Lance, Axe, or Bow and Arrow?

In order, sword (because Kuro), Lance, archery, then axe. In a survival situation, however, I'd carry all four if I can.

6. Would you rather be a Generalist or a Specialist?

While it is easier for me to be a generalist given an overall jack-of-all trades personality, I feel that a small fireteam of specialists, each with their own particular set of skills, would be far superior.

7. Dragon or Phoenix?

Definitely dragon. Though... we have a phoenix captain (not my division) and he's super warm-hearted and fair.

8. Are Light and Sound opposites? Explain

Not in the traditional sense. I prefer to think of them as orthogonal axes of perception, much in the same respect that North and West tell us where we are, or real and imaginary determine the value of a number.

9. Say the most complicated, most scientific, smart sounding thing you can think of.

>be me
>be a bald eagle person about 25 years old
>be a grad student in theoretical metaphysics
>I am a recitation TA for an intermediate-level sacred geometry course
>smack pointer upon board and chalk diagrams on it

"" [to be completed]

10. Make a pun using another persons deviantart username.

11. What would you do if when you started doing an activity, time around you would stop, but you would still be doing your activity until you would normally finish, but absolutely no time would actually pass.

I would make the most out of it. After all, I'd have all the time in the world, right? Funny you ask; the exile Holt can do this to others to a limited extent.

12. What's the stupidest thing you have ever done?

It's not something I like to talk about. The only time I ever called 911 was during a nervous breakdown where I tried to get redirected to the suicide hotline.

13. Have you been tagged back by the same person? And how many times have you been tagged back?

never

Your turn! [to be completed]

Appel's Folly by Seanhawk23
Appel's Folly
The four-color theorem states that, given any separation of a plane into contiguous regions, producing a figure called a map, any such map in a plane can be colored using no more than four-colors in such a way that regions sharing a common boundary (henceforth considered adjacent) do not share the same color. Two regions are called adjacent if they share a common boundary that is not a corner (single point), where corners are the points shared by three or more regions. This problem is sometimes also called Guthrie's problem after F. Guthrie, who first conjectured the theorem in 1852. The conjecture was then communicated to de Morgan and thence into the general community. In 1878, Cayley wrote the first paper on the conjecture.

The four color theorem was proved in 1976 by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken. It was the first major theorem to be proved using a computer. Appel and Haken's approach started by showing that there is a particular set of 1,936 maps, each of which cannot be part of a smallest-sized counterexample to the four color theorem. (If they did appear, a smaller counterexample could be produced.) Additionally, any map that could potentially be a counterexample must have a portion that looks like one of these 1,936 maps. Showing this required hundreds of pages of hand analysis. Appel and Haken concluded that no smallest counterexamples exist because any must contain, yet do not contain, one of these 1,936 maps. This contradiction means there are no counterexamples at all and that the theorem is therefore true. Initially, their proof was not accepted by all mathematicians because the computer-assisted proof was infeasible for a human to check by hand. Since then the proof has gained wider acceptance, although doubts remain.

Three colors are adequate for simpler maps, but an additional fourth color is required for some maps, such as a map in which one region is surrounded by an odd number of other regions that touch each other in a cycle. The five color theorem, which has a short elementary proof, states that five colors suffice to color a map and was proved in the late 19th century; however, proving that four colors suffice turned out to be significantly harder. A number of false proofs and false counterexamples have appeared since the first statement of the four color theorem in 1852.

Fallacious proofs were given independently by Kempe (1879) and Tait (1880). Kempe's proof was accepted for a decade until Heawood showed an error using a map with 18 faces (although a map with nine faces suffices to show the fallacy). The Heawood conjecture provided a very general assertion for map coloring, showing that in a genus 0 space (including the sphere or plane), four colors suffice. Ringel and Youngs (1968) proved that for genus g>0, the upper bound provided by the Heawood conjecture also give the necessary number of colors, with the exception of the Klein bottle (for which the Heawood formula gives seven, but the correct bound is six).

Six colors can be proven to suffice for the g=0 case, and this number can easily be reduced to five, but reducing the number of colors all the way to four proved very difficult. This result was finally obtained by Appel and Haken (1977), who constructed a computer-assisted proof that four colors were sufficient. However, because part of the proof consisted of an exhaustive analysis of many discrete cases by a computer, some mathematicians do not accept it. However, no flaws have yet been found, so the proof appears valid. A shorter, independent proof was constructed by Robertson et al. (1996; Thomas 1998).

To dispel remaining doubt about the Appel–Haken proof, a simpler proof using the same ideas and still relying on computers was published in 1997 by Robertson, Sanders, Seymour, and Thomas. In December 2004, G. Gonthier of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England (working with B. Werner of INRIA in France) announced that they had verified the Robertson et al. proof by formulating the problem in the equational logic program Coq and confirming the validity of each of its steps.

Despite the motivation from coloring political maps of countries, the theorem is not of particular interest to mapmakers. According to an article by the math historian Kenneth May, “Maps utilizing only four colors are rare, and those that do usually require only three. Books on cartography and the history of mapmaking do not mention the four-color property.”
